Well, to be honest, we bombed the shit out of Europe and Japan during WWII. As a result, American manufacturing had no competition for 30 years. They could do no wrong and the choices were designed by the manufacturers and not the consumers. After the mid 1970's that all changed as the Japanese manufacturing industry took over innovating and making better products cheaper.

I know most American cars from the 1950'sand 1960's because when I would go to the car dealer with my dad for service on the family car, I would go through the Chilton service manuals in the service shop. Not only did they have pictures of parts breakdowns but they had images of all the car front grills and rear ends of all the years. It was cool to see the changes to the front and rear of cars throughout the years all on the same page!

I agree about EVs. But there are problems with them that people are glossing over to promote them. 1. Will the electric grid be able to keep up with the electrical demand as most infrastructure is old and hasn't been upgraded in 40 years. 2. Will classic cars lose value if we go all electric? 3. What about people who live in the city in apartments or park on the streets. How do they recharge? 4. Who pays for the charging system? 5. Electric is relatively cheap now. What's to keep the utility companies from jacking up the electrical rates once everyone is electric? These are questions not asked or answered as we are marched towards EVs by politicians

Europe is different than America. They have congested old cities with narrow streets. Big American cars just don't fit. That and the lack of concern for gas mileage in American cars makes the smaller European cars more appealing.
