  1. @1:08 Swampland was cheap. That's why they ended up developed as industrial. No one wanted a smoking, belching, stinking factory next to their house so swampland was used. Not many people lived near them anyway and no one was sorry to see them go as swamps were considered disease insect breeding areas. We now know better.

  3. Everything was made with steel. Bridges, buildings, cars, etc. When it decays, it rusts thus the rust belt. Mostly confined to The Great Industrial Northeast..

  5. I remember hitchhiking through Gary, Indiana back in the mid 1970's. What a smell. It stunk to high heaven before we even got close. It undoubtedly was the worst smelling city I ever been through and I've been through a lot.

  9. @10:05 Getting out of high school in 1971 I had no problem finding a job. And, if I quit that job, I could literally find a job the next day maybe 2 or 3. Nowadays, you better damn well have something lined up before you leave a job or else you could be sitting on your couch with your thumb up your ass for a very long time.

  10. More than anything else, corporate greed, killed the industry. GE in Schenectady, NY employed 29,000 people until Jack Welch took over. His "vision" was to make GE numer one or number two in the world in every department. So, many departments were sold off, including light bulbs, small appliances, and small generators even though those divisions were entirely profitable, they weren't #1 or #2 in the world. So, GE lost many opportunities for profit from divisions selling products that consumers wanted and needed. GEs work population went from 29,000 to around 6,000-7,000 and on top of that benefits were cut. Many workers were replaced by "consultants" who made more money but had absolutely zero benefits.
