  1. The helicopter thing is a Gyrocopter. The engine only powers the front drive prop, the upper blades are turned by air pressure (autorotation) and generate lift. They predate helicopters by a couple decades being a much simpler design. Think of it as a plane that has rotating wings. They can fly at extremely slow speeds without stalling or falling and don't need long runways, but they aren't able to truly hover.
