Pepper Spray is completely illegal in Australia too, as are credit card knives, tasers, batons and a whole lot of other weapons. Pocket knives and multi-tools aren't illegal, but you need a valid work reason to carry them, otherwise they are an illegally concealed weapon.

The reason the US homeless situation is so out of control, especially in cities like LA is a combination of local ordinances, complete lack of provisions for the mentally ill or those who simply cannot afford rent, the impossibility of being hired with a prison sentence when 1% of the population is incarcerated at any given time... the list goes on. Australia has homeless, and the way things are going with housing we are rapidly heading towards the Japanese situation with an entire class of Gainfully employed people who are homeless because rents are too high. But most destitute or mentally ill people do receive some form of welfare and care.

@chrisrumble2665 Best you can do is buy a noise maker, or a good solid torch which is for lighting purposes even if it is as solid as a metal stick. I used to work at airport screening, if someone came in with pepper spray we were required to call the police, who generally let the young woman off with a warning, but had to be done.

The real irony with the US health system is the few programs they do have for veterans and the like cost twice as much as the universal healthcare in every other country because without regulation the prices soar Saw a vid on that at some point. Also, all those bankruptcies must cost the economy a mint. And you can't collect taxes from someone who has gone bankrupt.

@jericson1109 I wear one for work sometimes, although strictly speaking I am not supposed to. Always got a couple in the car of course.

The problem is for the last 70 years the Republicans have been saying that any and all Social projects are a communist plot to destroy America. Guns are a right, not commie healthcare for the sick they say. But really its Reagan to blame, hes the one first who made the decision to allow provate interests to rin rampant.
