  2. North of Cairns there are a lot less paved roads, well once you get past Townsville, Rockhampton and Yeppoon anyway. I dunno about today, but getting to Cooktown at the base of Cape York involved a lot of dirt roads and ford crossings unsuitable for 2wds back in the 90s. North of Cooktown there is a road up to the tip, but its really 4wd only, not a lot of people live up there, just a few military baes and aboriginal communities. Same across Arhnem Land east of Darwin. God, I so want The Grand Tour to go Coast to Coast from Cooktown to Broome, talk about their most epic adventure ever, 24 years of Top Gear/GT and they came to Australia once, and did nothing.
