Most places in Australia don't get 3 Megabytes per second, even with the NBN rollout, which was strangled before it began by the liberals who cut it from a 3 year rollout 50 megabit to the house system to a 10 year rollout 25 megabit to the node system with copper to houses. You're alright if you live next to a node or in a major city, but in smaller towns, it sucks. And even 50 megabits is stupid slow when at that time people in parts of Europe could get 1000 megabits.

Funnelwebs are only found around Sydney and no one had died from a Redback since antivenin became available in the late 70s. White tails are also pretty nasty though, mainly because of the bacterial infections that accompany their bites.

But the numbers were decimated by up to 90% from smallpox and syphilis which travelled inland from Sydney long before white settlers arrived in what would become Victoria.

The major gold rush was in Ballarat, then spelled Ballaarat which is about 130km northwest of Melbourne and the find that sparked it all off was in Buninyong, today a suburb of Ballarat. But 'The Golden Triangle' encompassed several major towns in a region a couple hundred km across. Melbourne being the major port and capital city benefited a lot from the gold rush.
