Umpires, its always the Umpires call. Tackles might go to the Tribunal, a lot more often these days, they do it for things that used to be just a free kick or 50m penalty. But the Umpire calls the Mark, although these days video review is becoming a thing, it wasn't so much back then, and even now its less in AFL than in other sports like Cricket.

The ball weighs about half a kilo (2 pounds). It's a little bigger than an American Football, not much though and a different shape, less pointy for better bounces. And yeah, it can hurt, sting the hands a bit, its leather over hard inflated rubber, but its not like a cricket ball which is solid leather coming in at 90+mp/h, those can kill. Most AFL injuries are knee injuries.

Games take place Friday Night through Sunday Night, normally, sometimes you have mid-week ones for special occasions, or this past year because of Covid. Usually one game per week, you're in for trouble if the other team has 7 days rest and you have 3. Sometimes teams get by weeks, 1 per year, but generally its every week from March to September. There are 18 clubs, so usually 9 games every weekend and in a season each club typically will play every other club twice, although sometimes there are by weeks. Used to be a break in the middle for State of Origin, but they gave that up, runs throughout Autumn, Winter and Spring from the Pre-season up to the Grand Final.

The ball is fairly grippy in the dry, but rain and mud can make it harder, and you need two hands to hold it because its so fat. There was a great game in I think 2018 where it was pissing down rain and the ball was so slick with mud players couldn't get a hold of it.
