I think the 'wife beater' term has crept in from America, same as 'cookies,' 'stroller' and a bunch of other words. Its a singlet almost always, but an undershirt in more formal clothes stores.

A Garage is a shed to store your car in, or a place to get your car fixed.

Trousers means long pants, shorts mean short pants. We say both. And its definitely a mobile phone, or mobile for short. We occasionally say trash, but its usually rubbish and sometimes garbage.

In Australia an Apartment is mostly specific to flats opening onto indoor corridors. If the front door is on an exterior balcony/verandah or direct ground access it can be called an apartment but is almost universally called a flat. If its a semi- or completely detached small house which is one of several on a single property its a Unit or Flat depending on size. Flats are smaller and Units pretty much have to be separate buildings, no shared walls. But all four types can be called a flat in general conversation. There are also Townhouses which are like a two-story normal house, but with a dividing wall down the middle turning it into two separate dwellings with separate entrances and gardens.

Cookie is an American word being pushed hard by American owned corps like McDonalds and Subway and annoyingly starting top creep into bakeries as well, which really pisses me off. They are biscuits. Same as when they have a Candy Bar at the cinema, its a kiosk or snack shop! no one knows what the hell 'candy' is.

No, we just say chips, no Hot involved, so it can be confusing, if you need to separate from bagged chips you might say flat chips, smiths or something, but generally its just chips and context informs.
