What really happened was John Howard relaxed all the import tariffs protecting Australian industry, and over the next 15 years the country became increasingly flooded with cheap cars from Indonesia, China, India and France. Despite government bailouts, which mostly went to shareholders, Toyota, Holden and Ford ultimately moved their plants to Indonesia and Thailand so they wouldn't have to pay Union rates or Australian Taxes. Why pay $20 an hour when you can pay $20 a week? And also skimp on the AC.
