  1. It's a learned behaviour, they do it to keep people away from their nests, and it works. They swoop down, strike the head and fly up again. My advice, wear a helmet when riding, its the law anyway and it will stop them doing you any harm. Outside of swooping season though, they're nice to have around as they have a particularly musical warble call.
