Good catch, but no it was not strange. Soviet Union, at that time, was trying be subservient to USA, and did a few things that had profound effects on history. When China decided to help Korea fight the US invasion, they were promised fighter planes by Soviet Union. China did not have any. US had many.
But the Soviet Union betrayed China (to appease USA). China lost many soldiers because of US bombing. This betrayal resulted in Russia and China becoming enemies (among other things) and allowed the continued occupation of South Korea by USA.
Fast forward to today, one of the first things that Putin did was to mend relations with China. Russia and China are now fast friends, it will get better. They have the longest shared border in the world, which is now buzzing with activity. And China now has more planes than US. A bigger navy than US.
There will be corrections to the borders. Korea will be unified (US will get kicked out), and Taiwan will be reintegrated (USA will be kicked out). In each case, there will be little or no change to the countries themselves, or the people. China is no longer 'Communist' but more capitalist than US ever was. But the big change will be the ouster of USA.
