The reason they're high end vehicles is that batteries are still stupid expensive. So the vehicle can't be cheap, so the choice is to have a stripped down nothing vehicle for $60k, or throw the extra luxuries on it for $80k. The former won't sell, but the latter will. As battery prices continue to trend downward we'll see more lower end vehicles, but for now it's hard to get them at a reasonable price point.

I don't mind the exterior here, but I definitely agree it could be better. I can definitely see the tradeoffs on the exterior. They wanted a traditional look, but also had to ditch some of the traditional aggressiveness of the gas version for the sake of aerodynamics. It's a shame really as I think Stellantis in general is really good at making good looking vehicles. This ones' not "bad" it just doesn't stand out.
2
The XR probably also won't sell as most people won't want to pay more on top of the EV version to get less storage, lower payload, and more maintenance.
1
Have you ever seen a concept vehicle make it to market? I never have!
1
Google rambox tonneau cover. There are plenty of options. The rambox is not new for this version, Ram's been doing them for a few years now on their gas pickups.
1
Well, people have paid a lot of money for everything else in the segment, so much so that nobody can keep up with the demand. I doubt they'll have any trouble selling these.
1
"Better deal" based on what? hard to compare when they haven't released a price tag!
1
@amg500sl5 75% of people say they won't consider a new vehicle without screen mirroring technology.
1
My hope is that the show truck was not representative of the final version on that, I can't imagine that would get past any real world testing, I'm not waiting that long to load my groceries!
1
Those west coast hipsters buy orders of magnitude more trucks than all the farmers/ranchers/tradespeople combined. That's where the market is, and has been for decades. Why do you think so many trucks have short boxes and crew cabs? and why the box sides have gotten so high you can't practically lift things over them anymore? It's because trucks are built for the people who actually buy trucks. And that's not tradespeople/ranchers/farmers.
1
@nothere572 Better efficiency actually. Bigger battery, but gets longer range out of it.
1
And this is different from every other concept car ever shown how?
1
Which is no different from every other concept car shown for the past 40 years.
1
Considering some other companies' vapourware, this one's actually pretty believable!
1
@TheKingOfInappropriateComments some companies don't even want to do that after the cars are in sale.
1
I'm sure I can turn off the logo. I have wire cutters.
1
This vehicle already has a longer range than the ICE version, nice to see for once!
1
Most people on here aren't that old. You're talking the 80s or earlier!
1
Without knowing what its money is, we really don't know!
1
Have you ever seen a concept vehicle that made it to production? I haven't.
1
But at what cost?
1
What's the relevance to this video? You're responding to a review of a future electric vehicle from one brand to ask about 2 current gasoline vehicles by different manufacturers in a different market segment?
1
imagine how many fewer gas engines we can manufacture in place of all the PHEVs on the road.
1
At your local Ram dealer. The company has been selling gas powered pickups since 1914.
1
So far every EV on the market except Tesla exceeds their EPA range in real world testing. No reason to believe this will be different.
1
Why wouldn't you want a 5 year old vehicle when the batteries are usually still under warranty at that point and are well known to last at least 3 times that long?
1
In general, much better than gasoline vehicles as cooling isn't as much of an issue.
1
what about it? It's a $200k vehicle, I sure hope this isn't trying to compete in that market, I doubt it will sell well up at that price point.
1
Without pricing it's hard to tell, but based on the numbers they've shown so far, if they can keep the price within 10k of the lightning Ford should be pretty scared!
1
sure, if you charge to 100% it will take an hour (or more), but if you're smart about it you won't do that. charge to 80% and continue your trip. It will take under half an hour. For this truck, it will probably take 45 mins to get to 80%. Keep in mind that bigger batteries can charge faster and hold that higher rate for longer without ramping down.
1
yet shorter range, less towing capacity, and less storage space.
1
100% agree. That's why Tesla did so well with Model S, they were the first EV manufacturer who made a car that was electric, instead of making something "futuristic" and "unique" which really just meant ugly. That's also where they will fail with Cybertruck, sure lots of people will buy one (if it ever makes it to market) but far more people will want to just buy a truck, that happens to be electric.
1
Aerodynamics.
1
Based on what? The numbers they give for battery size, drag coefficient, and range all match up and make sense for that range. So what do you think you know that their engineers who have been doing real world testing don't?
1
I don't mind it, but it's not as good as a regular Ram. I understand why, it's both aerodynamics, and the "look at me" light up badging, but I do wish they could have done better.
1
The Silverado has nicer specs than the F150. That said, I don't like its looks, and I have a lot of trouble trusting anything designed by GM. Until the Ram was released I was really torn whether to go F150 or silverado, like the F150 better in most ways, but the silverado gets the fast charging right and more range, 2 places Ford really missed on IMO. The Ram though looks to do it all, assuming they get it to market without downgrades, in a timely fashion, and at a competitive price point. All big "if"s!
1
You're probably right, but it's pretty premature to talk pricing when Ram hasn't yet. Though keep in mind that the gas versions of most trucks can get up to that range these days too!
1
So far every EV except Tesla EXCEEDS their EPA rated range in real world testing,
1
steering wheel is an odd choice, but ultimately probably not relevant as you tend to set it once and forget it. As for body styling. Aerodynamics, what can I say. It's not great, but I don't really mind it.
1
Have you EVER seen a concept car make it to production? I haven't!
1
this truck is quoted to have MORE range than the gas version of the same thing.
1
They showed up with the longest range, fastest charging, most towing capacity, most storage. It's hard to call it "disappointing"
1
Can't go through tires any faster or more expensively than my Tesla does!
1
@jimmyblackwell8784 and we all know that every vehicle on the road uses tires with the same ratings. In fact semi trucks only get MINUTES out of each set!
