  2. I think what she meant by the gap, is that one smallpox was eradicated, we stopped vaccinating against it. This means that older individuals are immunized against smallpox, and therefore presumably will have some immunity, but anyone younger will not. That's the Gap the younger people that are not immunized against smallpox.
