The great thing about insulation is it works both ways, keeps the house hot in the winter and cool in the summer. In fact where I live adding a little bit of insulation has allowed us to avoid adding an air conditioner at all. Now obviously that's not a solution in all climates, but if you live somewhere marginal you can get away with insulation while all your neighbors are spending electricity on their air conditioner.

@brianzmek7272 while true, it's not really that difficult to add an HRV or ERV system as part of your retrofit, and properly controlled ventilation with energy recovery is far better for both the insulation value of the home as well as the air quality in your home versus relying on the house being drafty.

@helplmchoking It amazes me that so many homes in the US are built on raised foundations at all. Every house around here, with almost no exceptions, has a full basement. Older ones aren't well insulated, but we all have basements.

I have to question the claim that a heat pump dryer is likely to last longer than a traditional dryer, traditional dryers are incredibly simple devices, and tend to last the longest of all major appliances, a heat pump dryer by contrast adds a lot of complication to it, and while far more efficient I really question the idea that it will last twice as long.

Unfortunately the economics in this video are significantly off for my part of the world, I ran the numbers here and I would need a cop of greater than 5 just to cover the energy costs with the difference in the price of natural gas versus electricity. And that doesn't even start to look at installation cost. For now I'm keeping my high efficiency gas furnace, as much as I would really like to go to the heat pump route

@mbburry4759 I'm not sure which comment you're replying to. But none of my comments have catered to the wealthy. If you're referring to my insulation comments, it is far cheaper to have good insulation than to have an air conditioner. If you're referring to my basement comments, in my location basements have nothing to do with wealth, all houses have them. They simply don't build houses around here without them.
