Despite owning and using one of these for a long time, I never realized you could stack more than a single record up there. I always put one on the bottom, and one on the top of the spindle, and assumed that's all it could handle. I never tried a stack! You learn something every day!

What killed the changer was really a combination of things: with LP albums at 22 minutes per side instead of the single song 78s, they just weren't seen as being as essential, additionally other technologies were starting to appear on the scene (8 track and cassette) so people were no longer using the records exclusively and needed more space for other components. The newer formats also served to transition records from something everyone listened to, to something that audiophiles and collectors used, neither one being a group which would dare use a changer. The changers were a great technology and I remember using them myself. That said, I still learned something in this video, I somehow thought you were limited to 2 records, not a full stack. I always placed one on the table and manually started it, and then had the second up top to change. I had always assumed that if you had more records up top they would all fall at once. I was wrong!
