My experience is pretty much the opposite, I had tons of those bulbs, but they had extremely short lifespans, way shorter than incandescent, and were ridiculously expensive. I did like the color rendering, but any hope of saving money over the long run vanished really quickly when I discovered how short their lifespan was.

@manitoba-op4jx current LEDs are much more consistent, they all consistently fail in a couple of years.

@mmmhorsesteaks as an end consumer, I don't care what destroys it, I care that it didn't last. Yes those bulbs do get too hot to touch, which may be why they burn out so quickly.

This varies wildly depending on the LED bulb. Cheap bulbs are definitely problematic. The Phillips one he showed at the start is actually really good, of course the issue with it, and all LED bulbs I found, is that their lifespan is significantly shorter than incandescent, meaning that you never make up with savings in electricity, the increased cost of the bulb.

I had many of those Philips bulbs, ridiculously short lifespan. They've all burned out now. But realistically, I've never found any LED bulb that will last anywhere near the claimed lifespan. From a pure financial sense, incandescent bulbs are significantly better. They last much longer than LEDs do, and cost next to nothing, the shortened lifespan of LEDs in comparison means that you never recoup the extra purchase price through electricity savings over the life of the bulb.

@mmmhorsesteaks The drivers are definitely the weak spot. Wiring has been inspected and certified several times, main entrance cable and panel has been upgraded. Power in my area is known for reliability as generation is close to the end user on a stable grid. The philips bulbs as pictured at the start of this video were really bad and have almost all failed at this point, I also have ceiling fixtures that have non-replacable LED panels, several LED light tubes (replace flourescent tubes) and many other LED bulbs, I have tried ones from pretty much every major brand. I replace a bulb, tube, or integrated fixture a few times a year. The only filament bulb I have left is the one in the oven, and after 12 years I finally had to replace that one this past month. I wish I could get that kind of life from an LED! As it stands, with the cost of LED bulbs, and the ridiculously short lifespans, they are both a financial, and environmental, disaster. That said, the sucker in me keeps buying them because they're "Supposed" to last so much longer that I should be saving on both purchase price and electricity use. I just wish it were actually true.

Meanwhile most of mine died within the first three or four years, and I think I may only have one left at this point. I found in general their lifespan to be dramatically shorter than the incandescent bulbs that they replaced while they also had a much higher purchase cost. There is no way that I saved more on electricity than I paid extra for the bulb itself over the short lifespan.

I had a bunch of those Phillips yellow LED bulbs. Unfortunately they were super expensive, and didn't last anywhere near as long as an incandescent bulb.

The Canadian government has explicitly stated that they believe red rear turn signals to be a safety issue. They've also stated that they are not planning to do anything about it, because it would make it too hard for the automakers to make different rear turn signals for the Canadian market than the American one. Despite the fact that they intentionally make different rules from the American market for a few things to make it harder for individuals to import vehicles from the US at the request of automakers, such things as bumper standards and immobilizers. Also despite the fact that the vast majority of the vehicles in question actually have amber turn signals when the same vehicle is released for the European, or Asian markets. And additionally despite the fact that Amber turned signals are perfectly legal in the US and therefore they would be no need for automakers to make two versions.

This has been a rant of mine ever since daytime running lights were mandated in Canada where I live. It was always the wrong solution. It would have been simpler to implement, and much safer, if they had simply mandated that the existing headlights were on, rather than come up with a completely new forward-only lighting solution. Worse yet, with modern dashboards that are backlit at all times regardless of the state of the headlights, people no longer knew that they were driving in the dark without their tail lights illuminated because everything in front of them they could see was lit up. The government has finally decided to do something about it, though it only applies starting next year and going forward. Still not a perfect solution, but it is a little bit better. The new solution is that cars must have either a light sensor to turn on the headlights/tail lights, or must not light up the dash unless the headlights are on.

@RelakS__ if the desire was to avoid running the headlights, then they should have just made it the parking lights. Again already existing lights that satisfy the same purpose but also illuminate the rear of the vehicle. There was never any need to invent new lighting for this.

They produced great light, they fit in light fixtures better than most CFL bulbs of the time, and they dimmed relatively well. The only really big downsides were their ridiculously short lifespan, and very high price. I had many of them, almost all burnt out now.
