Awnings are actually coming back. Just not in residential construction. I'm seeing a lot of commercial buildings with built-in awnings going up. Often the awnings are actually solar panels too for a double benefit! My house is newer than awnings, but our big, south facing, front window has a pretty big roof overhang above it, which I think makes a big difference, Though I am a long way north, so not as much as I'd like as, even in the heat of summer, our solar angle is a bit lower than you southerners in the USA so the bottom of the window still gets the afternoon sun.
