  5. THE IRONY: For creativeness/inventiveness, no nation has more graduates than China. The People's Republic has over 140 million of them. That's more than the entire population of Japan, more than the combined population of Britain & France, or the combined population of 3 of their high tech rivals, in the form of Taiwan, Netherlands, & South Korea. It's been like that for about 30 years. RESULT: So, where are all the brilliant inventions, wonderful symphonies, or great discoveries? Where are the dozens, of Nobel Laureates? Instead, China is better known for leading the world in the theft of high tech and intellectual property. 👏

  9. Yes, you're right. Unfortunately: 1. Conscription is a great way to hide unemployment figures. 2. War, also offers many more external issues, on which a government can blame, internal hardships. 3. In a state of war, it's easier for an otherwise unpopular government, to rally support.

  15. It's much worse than that. China practices, "hostage diplomacy". Those moving to Singapore (or elsewhere), have friends, relatives, & colleagues, in China. The CCP can persecute these people, to force expats to do their bidding. Think of all those user names & passwords being shared.

  19. ​​ @graealex  No, not "1/100th of an inch. The claim was 5 nanometres. That's much smaller that 1/100th of an inch. A nanometre, is 1 millionth of a millimetre. So, 5 nanometres, equal 0.000127mm. So, 1/100th of an inch, is about 40,000 times bigger than that.

  25. I remeber the 1970's & 80's, protests against the military junta in Argentina, were led by mothers and grandmothers (of those who had gone "missing"). It's a part of most societies that riot police are very reluctant to touch. This is also the case in East Asian culture, especially with the elderly. So, yes! Others should have supported the youth. In fact, old ladies should have led the way.

  27. The CCP may try to convince the Chinese people that the cause of all this, is something/someone, external. They'll then try to get the people to rally behind them in fighting the "foreign" threat.

As its labour force becines more expensive, a country must transition to knowlege intensive, highly value added industries, to avoid falling into the middle income trap (e.g., Philippines, Brazil, South Africa... etc.). That change, requires a creative, imaginative, free thinking workforce. You won't have such a workforce, when you train children with a Confucian based education, implemented by an authoritarian regime. China has over 140 million graduates. That's more graduates than the total population of nations like, Britain, France, Italy, or Australia. So, where are all the brilliant Chinese inventions, the beautiful symphonies, great discoveries and Nobel laureates? Instead, China remains famous, or its dependence in stolen technology.

  31. Too interested in short term gains. So, if anyone attempts protest/reform, someone will report them and receive a nice bonus (perhaps, social credit points, a job, or promotion... etc.).

When real team cohesion is needed, like in men's soccer, then despite all the decades effort and expenditure, China can't even reach the World Cup tournament or be Asian Champions. Japan & Korea consistently shame China on the soccer field.

  39. Sadly, there's hardly any protest, from Islamic world. Be it, predominantly Islamic nations (Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, Sudan...), or groups (Hamas, Al Qaeda & the Taliban), little is said of Uyghurs/Xinjiang. Infact, many happily collaborate, with China. Imagine if the US or British government, demolished mosques? No Fatwas/Jihads, have been proclaimed, for CCP actions in Xinjiang.
