There are some exceptions to that rule. In 1983, for example, America invaded the Caribbean nation of Granada, to restore its, democratically elected, government.
The exercise was of no economic or strategic benefit, to the USA, at all. It was purely, altruistic behaviour.
I know that America, like most other countries, is usually motivated by economic, self interest. I'm just saying that occasionally, their actions spring from morality.
