Okay, WHAT?! The U.S. had a metro system as early as 1897?! AND they still have the original metro line too?! That's insane! I didn't even think such things were possible until the 1940s or 50s at the very least. It's kind of sad how hopelessly they lagged behind in terms of public transport as a whole compared to Europe or Japan for example, but that's another topic for another day. Regardless, my city (Rotterdam for those curious) has largely metro's running underground, but in the south it emerges to ride above ground and it gives you quite the view of the city. The previous elevated railway from the 1860s also rode above ground and across the Muse river until it sadly was torn down in 1994 after surviving the 1940 Blitz. I think there's still some video's that show the original line on Youtube, luckily, as well as the many photo's. Cheers!
