UKIP appealed to left and right - it took millions of votes off Labour and that wide support hurt it because its vote was spread out too widely. On the other hand, the Green Party has won a seat in the Commons despite getting fewer votes than UKIP cos it appeals pretty much exclusively to the left. That allowed it to focus its campaigning and win Caroline Lucas's seat with 31% of the vote in 2010.

The good MPs do care about their constituents and constituency. Like, occasionally you'll get an individual parachuted into a constituency they have no connection to, but by and large the local parties will select a candidate with a local history and love for their community. It also gives you a personal relationship with your representative just like you do with your doctor, postie and others and allows for fun traditions. In Wycombe, all the elected persons (MP, mayor, councillors) are weighed pubically at the start of a term and again when seeking re-election. If their weight has increased they're booed for gaining weight at taxpayer expense. They're cheered if they haven't gained weight. It's all in good fun.
