  1. MPs already derive their power from the people in deed if not in words. A directly elected prime minister would simply make it official. And I don't see how it would change anything for the monarchy. The relationship would stay the same - the PM runs the government, the monarch is informed of events and advises.

  2. Some MPs build such a strong relationship with their constituents that they can secure election under any party name or none. Douglas Carswell proved this.
