  1. It wasn't just tax, the One Nation Tories in the Conservative Party are basically Democrats, while Truss and her supporters are moderate Republicans. And the One Nation Tories, or Wets, as Thatcher called them, hated Truss's entire programme for government - low taxes, small government, higher defence spending, more self-responsibility, fracking for gas, more oil drilling, continuing to stay out the EU. The taxes became a powderkeg cos Truss's U-turn showed her weakness and let the Wets smell blood. At that point they saw the opportunity to replace her with Rishi Sunak - the British Obama in terms of his politics and big spending
