Technically you CAN buy titles. That's one reason Boris Johnson got himself into trouble - all those big Tory party donors who donated £1,000,000+ all found themselves sitting in the House of Lords. Amazing coincidence, huh? Michael Jackson's mistake was asking the Queen for a knighthood. She can only give out knighthoods in the most prestigious orders, eg, The Order of the Garter, Order of the Thistle, Order of Bath. Had Jackson gone to the government they'd have probably given him one in a lower order that they control, i.e., the Order of the British Empire. New Labour were in power at the time and they loved giving out titles to celebs in hopes some glitz would rub off.

No, you didn't legally name that star. Only the International Astronomical Union can legally name objects in space.

Slight correction: titles are inherited by the eldest son, not child. Most titles would become extinct if only direct female heirs are available, because titles normally pass only through the male line. There are some rare exceptions though. For example, the Dukedom of Marlborough can pass down the female line (the daughter or sister of the Duke) if there's a male (grandson or nephew) to inherit it.

@hbp_ becoming Duke of Cornwall gives you control of the Duchy of Cornwall. The Duchy produces millions of pounds in profits for the Duke/Duchess to live off but you can only get the title if you're first in line to the throne.
2
@tihomirrasperic there is no English Crown. It's the British Crown.
2
@seandobbins2231 Americans can hold substantive knighthoods if they obtain dual citizenship. John Paul Getty Jr went from honourary knight to substantive upon gaining British citizenship.

Actually you were right the first time. There's NO such thing as the UK legal system. There's one legal system for England & Wales, a second legal system for Scotland, and Northern Ireland has a third system that is semi attached the English & Welsh legal system. There's no such thing as UK or British law, and people who use those terms have mispoken.

Not many websites let you choose titles like lord, rev. Some do, like London Zoo, but shopping websites don't. Well, not the ones I use.

@PassionPno lords aren't royals, the lowest title an HRH would be given is Earl but most Earl's aren't Royals. There are currently 192 Earl's in the UK, and only one of them is a Royal Earl - HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the youngest brother of King Charles.

@Stettafire tell that to Meghan Markle

Basically, yeah. Only the king can give out hereditary peerages, though the prime minister can give out non-hereditary peerages, known commonly as life peerages.

King's Bar. Queen Elizabeth II died.

You only get in trouble for falsely calling yourself lord or lady if it's part of a fraud. You can even legally change your first name to Lord or Lady by deed poll. It takes 15 minutes. And it's worth pointing out that lords/ladies aren't nobility. Most are life peers.
1
@JeremyJackrabbit you can call yourself Lord if you like provided you're not defrauding someone or pretend to legally a lord. As someone in the UK you could even change your first to Lord by deed poll completely legally. All it takes is 15 minutes, a processing fee and you could legally be Mr Lord Jackrabbit.

Those are good cos Sealand is fully open about them being gag gifts, they've never misled anyone.
1
It's only three legal systems. England and Wales are one legal system

No land comes with Barony. There are two ways to become a Baron: be the eldest son of an hereditary Baron, or be gifted a non-hereditary Barony when you're placed in the House of Lords. New hereditary barony's haven't been created outside the senior Royal family in decades.

Tbf, Scotland itself only fully abolished feudalism less than 20 years ago.
1
You're right, but there must be some kind of loophole cos Meghan Markle gets away with calling herself the "Duchess of Sussex".
1
Your ancestor could have bought a Lordship, most likely. It was perfectly legal for a prime minister to sell the title Lord (and a seat in the House of Lords to go with it) up until the mid-1920s.
1
@T.E.S.S. it isn't illegal to call yourself lord. Lord Sutch, 3rd Earl of Harrow never got in trouble for his made up titles.
1
@adorabell4253 in the UK real lords, barons, etc do get it put on their passport.
1
@goddessmelanisia why haven't they forced Meghan Markle to choose?
1
Absolutely. All burgers are now required to bow in your presence
1
Yeah, this is correct. Look at how many members of the Monster Raving Looney Party call themselves Lord without getting into trouble.
1
@wolfrainexxx no. If it were they would've arrested Meghan by now.
1
@michaelgreen1515 this isn't really correct. Lord/Lady are forms of address for Barons/Baronesses. For example, Baroness Thatcher was called "Lady Thatcher" when you spoke to her, but her legal name was Baroness Thatcher.
