I always thought that it was Vikings, blown off course, which led to MesoAmerican myths of white, bearded visitors. The Bay of Jars in Brazil is said to contain Roman amphorae, perhaps from a shipwrecked Roman vessel that was "blown off course." Hmmm, that would make a good movie, shipwrecked Romans or Vikings being worshipped as Gods in Central/South America.

@AncientPuzzles According to Herodotus (not always reliable), the Phoenicians circumnavigated Africa around 600 BC. The greatest sailors of their time. It's possible a daring Phoenician explorer went out a little too far, got caught in cross currents and ended up in the New World. There's no record or trace of their adventures, unfortunately. Philip Beale crossed the Atlantic in a replica of a Phoenician ship to prove it was possible.
