It would be nice to think that Identity Politics could be "opted out of" by all. But in reality Identity Politics is inevitable when you have diversity. Diversity + Proximity = different groups competing for dominance. The Martin Luther King Jr ideal (though admirable) was always unrealistic. Liberal idealists need a dose of Realism.

@realMaverickBuckley Politics & Culture are downstream from racial demographics. The Left knows this, which is why they seek mass-immigration and mass-diversity. If you want to control the culture & politics of a society, you must control the racial demographics. We can all point to nice, admirable individuals like Inaya Folarin Iman, but we need instead to look at what happens at a macro (rather than micro) level when societies become highly diverse.

@hkvery3852 HK - Identity Politics is inevitable when you have diversity. Forget this Classical Liberal dream that everyone is going to adopt color-blind individualism. That is just not how humans are on a large scale. Humans are tribal. Diversity = division. The more diversity, the more opportunity for division. Liberals need to stop thinking about what seems morally or intellectually ideal on paper and start looking at how humans inevitably are in reality.

@realMaverickBuckley "Racist" is a fairly meaningless concept. Is it "racist" for Sweden and Norway to prefer that their countries have majority populations that are Scandinavian? (or at least European). Technically yes it is racist. But is it racist and a bad thing for the Swedes and Norwegians? No. Something can be technically racist and a good thing to do in your self-interest. By agreeing that we must never ever be "racist" we are allowing the Left to set the moral parameters that we must conform to. We shouldn't.

@christopher-bj8de They do. But they also call the overwhelming migration of different cultures into an area Cultural Genocide of the native population (i.e in Tibet) or "Ethnocide." If it is wrong when it happens to some tribe in the Amazon then it is wrong when it happens to the English, or Swedes, or Dutch (etc). The forced repatriation that OP envisions may not be politically doable or morally excusable. But at the very least we should agree that the migration tap needs to be turned off.

@billgiles3261 Equality of Opportunity is an idea that is certainly not without merit. But it is worth recognizing that different outcomes lead in turn to different new opportunities. In other words: it is impossible for everyone to have the same amount of opportunities (in life) in a society where people freely achieve different outcomes. Instead, we should talk about a limited number of "minimum base-line" opportunities that everyone can have. i.e "You won't have all the opportunities in life that someone who's parents achieved 'xyz' does, but you will at least have these specific opportunities that everyone has as a minimum" One person having 4 opportunities and another person having 2 should not be seen as an injustice if everyone gets 2 (for example).

It doesnt have to be physical characteristics" Of course race/ethnicity isn't the only thing that humans can be tribal about. But it is a major one, and a particularity dangerous one. If we wish to minimize the amount of things humans can be tribal about it would be wise to keep diversity to a minimum. We shouldn't be so naive as to assume we can have mass-diversity and social harmony at the same time.

@shelleyphilcox4743 "I've got nothing in common with people of any real value relating to physical characteristics" I think you might be surprised to find that you have at least some. Imagine you are a Black woman growing up in a country that is 95% White. You will inevitably have experiences that are unique because of that minority status. For example you may grow up being frustrated that White, blonde, slim girls are the beauty standard in society rather than Black girls with dark frizzy hair and large figures. This might push you towards Intersectional Politics (feminism, racial identity politics) or worse: to work at the Guardian or Huffington Post. Of course you'd still be an individual, and there is a chance that you grow up to be a Inaya Folarin Iman or Candice Owens rather than a Michelle Obama or Dianne Abbot (i.e bitter at White people and driven by identity politics). But your experience growing up will tend to shape your opinions, values, and politics. You will have some experiences in common with the 5% of the country that is non-White, even if you disagree with them on other things. This is (sadly) why Identity Politics is inevitable with diversity.

@stevenborg102 I suspect Blair is of the "to make an omelet you must break a few eggs" school of thought. That's certainly the impression he gave in all other endeavors (the Iraq War for example). He just does not seem to care about collateral damage of policy. Maybe I'm wrong and they really were spectacularly naive. But it seems more like carelessness.

@realMaverickBuckley I didn't say anything about forced repatriation (I don't think it is even doable, even putting aside the moral concerns). I suggest that the nations of Europe - like England, Sweden, Norway, Ireland - could simply say: "That's enough immigration and diversity for us, thanks. We will be turning away people who seek to come here from now on." Is that racist? Of course it is. But is it in the self-interest of the Swedes, the Norwegians, the English and Irish (and so on_? Yes. So how about we stop caring so much that considering our own self-interest will get us called racist by people who don't have our self-interest at heart anyway, and calmly, politely, but firmly assert our right to control demographics in our favor. Bear in mind we're going to be cursed as "racist, supremacist, privileged, colonialist" anyway regardless of what we do. There is nothing wrong with preferring relative homogeneity to mass-diversity.

Or at the very least, to turn the tap off (so to speak) halt the inward migration. Reduce it to a very small trickle.
