I'm now 74, female, and long ago chose that song as my ID, interpreting the term 'old' as stuck in a rut, unwilling to change etc. The term 'old' in the context of the song came from a viewpoint of counter-culture that I much enjoyed and lived by as a young teen and adult in culturally hip West-Berlin.

I've followed you since last year and it is totally obvious that you play the guitar, the piano (drums?) etc... there was footage of you w your old band (billionairs?) -- you teach, your conversations w guests are on a one to one level regarding recording and music....... Those people you quote are just not very observant or just haven't watched your videos. (Short attention span?). I'm "old", I have time to figure things out, I get it :-)

Never liked fast playing. Too technical, sounds like practice or boasting and attention seeking. The sports analogy is a bit off if the essence of the activity is speed.

Ooh, big surprise -- one of my favorites!! Didn't think others appreciate it as much as I do:-)

Something missing in this conversation: is it even desirable for these bands to still be around if they were not able to grow their music into something more appropriate than revolt, angst and desires? I'm 74 and have not been tempted to watch old (< literally) bands perform the music of their younger years. When I listen to /watch the good old 60s bands on YT, which I currently love to do, they invariably bring up a sense of nostalgia that I enjoy. I also enjoy how they look and what that meant in those days - to be different, rebellious, set one's own standards, and since this was in demand, it was also supported by record labels and tv. But, that spirit is no longer what these (literally) old bands stand for and so they are a fading memory of who they used to be - a sad situation I don't need to watch IRL.

Discovered them and DELICATE STEVE at the same time. I was surprised and enjoyed their music.

Very few here seem to agree with Rick. I do, and so does my husband. We're older generation.... to us, this music is not just a genre, it had meaning, it stood for a lifestyle, for thought patterns different from the middle-of-the-road conservative values. In our youth, yachts stood for oppulence, debauchery, and showing off. To us, Rock and Yacht is a contradiction in terms and denigrates the inherent values of rock music. PS. Rick's tirades are always a lot of fun!! :-D

Smiling throughout this interview 🙂. Have been waiting for this for a while. Thank you both!!

I have been wondering for years now.... Do we see the results of mass dumbification through tech, or did lack of understanding suddenly become more visible? My guess: the lack of actual person-to-person communication has altered people's behavior. beginning with online groups like Yahoo and later magnified with the onset of texting. This does not bode well. I'd hate to work in "education"'.

Listened to this again :-) -- loved it even more <3 -- and was not at all familiar with Jimmy Webb.

Sign of the times. I'm so sorry for young folks trying to live their dreams these days. When are they going to break out of this morass? Start an alternative movement! That's how the 60s began. We didn't like what the square folks had to offer! Revolt against the techies and middle management!

You are so blessed to have been able to enjoy Aunt Penny for as long as you did. She is/was such a treasure. <3
