I was given a warning in Oct 1987 after being caught on 11m ssb.... ironically the man who dobbed me in..was a person who sold me an ssb set a few years earlier...anyway I'd apparently wiped out his video player that was recording his wife's favourite TV show the "thornebirds"..its amazing what info comes out from reading a dti officer's upside clipboard ......and asking a few trusted neighbours.....I went out next day after the vist and confiscation and sourced a new cobra 148 but hid it when they came to interview me in early November....oddly enough a few years later in 1991 my mum worked in the local grocery store and saw the same man who reported me to the dti/ofcom get caught for shoplifting fresh ham from the deli counter by trying to put it in his pocket and just pay for his bread rolls ... but alas the store owner was a man who would put his confetti on elastic at a wedding and would never back down and said ""take the ham out of yer pocket mate and dont come back""" ...and thus he was barred for life from the shop.... Mum said after relating the story ""every dog has his day son"".. and felt she had seen justice done for her little soldier ...I was 17 at the time.... bless her she's 73 now and I had lunch with her today man she can still fight love you mum x Ps always a gem from you Lewis well done m8

Redifusion set up a large cable undertaking here in the south east essex uk in 1964 it closed the antiquated 5 channel system in 1997 due to competition from the superiority of the the multichannel vrigin media system ...in late 80s though they introduced Premier movie channel .£10 per month ..but my friend noticed that all they encrypted it with was a simple signal that they removed with an inline notch filter at your end ...so a few electronic buffs soon copied these filters / pcb .....lol.....and sold them in local pubs ...for £20 sovs Or £30 sovs if you wanted the fitting service x

The times I've heard it on shortwave was always late at night...after a while it was always followed by another very strong transmission booming 5+9+30....from our loft bedroom .......identified as the "xyl station" bellowing...... "TURN IT DOWN OR PLUG THOSE KENWOOD HEADPHONES IN !!!!" Happy to say we celebrate 30 years of wedded bliss next year 😅 Great info Lewis keep em coming rog x

About 5 years back a ham on 2 meters told us off and lectured me and a mate discussing published scanner frequencies we kindly told him to jog on ...it was a joke ....I also remember buying shortwave magazine in the mid nineties and reading a 3 page article on scanning with not one single frequency in it! That's because radio communications agency had told the publishers off lol

A great peace of Manchester radio history Lewis......it just goes to show...what the public want the public doesn't always get.......in essex in the late eighties and early 90s inner city radio "icr" in Chelmsford held a similar status for a while and the complaint to ofcom/ris/dti came from the chief engin eer of essex radio complaining about the inner city's monster signal ....the icr engineer was kieth jermey g7wcm ..pirate legend in essex and London in his own lifetime sadly now a silent key....he had pirated top band since 1970 and been involved in all aspects of pirate radio since the early 70s chased and caught by the dti to many times to remember....he built my 1st rig in 1989 for infinity fm....he loved hanging out on top band and 2 meters... loathed by many but loved by us pirates and real hams ......when some youths Stole his 2 meter set on pretense asking for a light after knocking on his door one afternoon we purchased him a new straight away from ebay because 2 meters was just not the same without him .....his early exploits not long after deciding finally to go legal and getting a licence in the mid 90s were the ones that led to a ban on air for a while in 2000 for falling foul of the repeater group locally...that story can be found on the lpws website Kieth we won't forget you m8 x Goigle kieth Stafford inner city radio and you can hear some of the shows he done back in the day x

Great video lewis.,...chaos reigns at the Ukraine/Russian border with this type of traffic ....I would imagine its a mix of both sides pysops along with pirates chucking in there part to its so easy today with hf set 100w good antenna to put this stuff across 40 metres. I remember clearly hearing the very last of the e05 transmissions in 2003 it felt just like 5 years earlier on hearing the very last of the Swedish rhapsody number station broadcasts ..... it made feel like the agent.in the field as we were hanging on to the very "end of ende " to those transmissions in the spring of 98 just above the 80meter amateur band on 3.825mhz ....back to E05 however ....I used to hear its transmissions in 1997/98 very very strong in s.e essex uk in the evenings beaming to Europe and beyond with that Iranian jammer clearly warbling underneath the dsb-am suppressed carrier...... "American foreign policy has never been welcome in terhan" ......many readers of and contributers to ENIGMA newsletter were sure the transmissions were emanating from the us transmission facilities at uk Air base at Barford St John in Oxfordshire....hence the monster 9mhz band signal to essex that had a groundwave swirl and feel to it...

  19. my friend was an apprentice then a radio applications engineer at the marconi site Chelmsford and occasionally on overtime at weekends ran a pirate medium wave / am station from its site using the company long wires zeps and inverted L ....along with there fantastic earth system.....when the gpo asked to come to site looking for it and asking g questions about access ....security said " sorry government site sensitive defence work go away please" Chelmsford police at the time in early 70s did not have the appetite to attend either on a weekend as to busy with there own stuff x Great vid Lewis keep em coming

I don't think I slept more than 4 hours a night from 1988 to 1998 as I was glued to a scanner over night....its funny how the authorities behaved we had little wave of warnings here in south east essex uk .....in the late 80s and 90s .......the local police had the evening paper publish an article where they said they can track scanner users down and know when there listening..we rolled up laughing at that one as we chatted on 11m ssb ....then one day soon after my equally addicted scanner friend had the police turn up on his door step asking him to stop listening in every night on his vintage realistic scanner ...he was shocked but ......not for long ...it came out eventually from a sympathetic police officer that a family member he fell out with had dobbed him in..... strange days ....and good times listening to the old bill miss them days ....1 friend got caught on a handheld scanner in the street and the young cop just warned him and took its serial number .....and a policeman once told me though that ..you could listen... but must not divulge to others what you heard.

I slept very little in the 80s and 90s due to that magic box of tricks the "realistic scanner" from tandy and had to be pulled away from the scanner to go to the pub on fridays!...and then I wouldn't go on to a club as I wanted to get back home to catch all the.... police.....cordless phone...cellphone....baby alarm action.....arguments, love affairs' divorces, and drug deals, even ladies of the night being ordered over the phone like it was burger joint......and that quite respectable neighbour a few doors down who was so sweet... my jaw hit the floor one night ....even my my mum supposedly asleep in the next room shouted out to me "turn that up I missed that bit"! those were days .....Great article Lewis well done x

I once had one purchased from the back of "electronics today" a uk magazine long out of circulation now.....and was demonstrating it in the street with some teenage friends way back in 1985.....one of the girls took it into her kitchen where 2 sets of parents were chatting and drinking at the kitchen table she put it hidden on the work top and we listened in the street .....we nearly fell over whe they began to discuss buying counterfeit notes from another person Eg £5 for a forged £20 ...we were all 15 years old at the time unbeknown to the daughters of the parents I had taped it on the large portal ghetto blaster ....I played to my mum and she said best destroy this neighbourhood secret......strange but great days.... I love the clashing of other stations saw it occur once with e5 counting station vs an Iranian warble jammer (Iran back in the day and more recently clearly at odds with U.S foreign policy) ....and then an Israeli e10 counting station started up ....the target area must have been a right mess LOL Gongs and chimes frightened me as kid aged 10 with my first short wave reciever in 1980....some said they heard a similar gong in a German supermarket but that's another story....Great info as always thank you Lewis....speak.soon

  40. In early 80s a lady on the cb i knew ....her mother had cab firm i was amazed to see a taxi pmr set in her kitchen connected to a discone but pmr set ...a tait... had a channel selector and every channel was tuned to different cab Co in the area . She loved listening to the competition.

When I first got my scanner in 87 a massive manhunt erupted one night that went on until the early hours of the morning...we wandered out about 2am with my friends dog and naturally we were stopped by a lady c.i.d officer that wouldt have done the stasi proud in east Germany ..we said we could hear it all on the radio in our house .the police just looked confused......without stating it was a pro 57 we were listening on ...they ran us through there systems and let us go about on our way ...but that event all started when one man slipped out of a flat they were staking out and past the observation car....it was both manic and entertaining as they pursued him through a school football field but clearly this guy was a predecessor to ussain bolt a d slipped away ....no air support back then....Great days x

Years ago ...i called a cab and listened on the scanner i heard the driver say to the controller i was pain the a%*&# As i had asked the cab Co to get the driver to knock on my door as we were 100 yards from the road.....when knocked my dad reminded the driver that we were his living and not a pain in the a%#&😅😅😅😅

  53. as i 10 year old i begged my mum to take me to this shop in 1981 when I had to go to see a specialist at a London hospital for a check on my fema bone i had broke in 1978......as it had no healed straight ! ....but it wasn't to be ....she said we had no time i was choked !.....so I had to resort to carrying on begging to use other people's am sets whenever I could.......until November 81 ..I still think of those days it was a great time to be on AM ....Great video Lewis

Intresting video ......I was busted in 1987 for 11 metres ssb and nearly caught in 1989 for fm broadcast piracy.....I have to say I called them in for ham band interference recently from various home devices....never have I dealt with a more disinterested and dismissive organisation...and yet here in essex.....at the very same time ..a pirate station I traced just half a mile away ... I traced to its source operated for a whole year almost 247/365 with not a visit ...except for the vandal who destroyed the antenna cables....my 11meter ssb gear was converted to 10 meters I later heard and the linear used on hf....dodgy bunch to in them days ...interesting times though being chased and thankfully there now a bit lapse in responding to some stuff and more Intrested in selective listening. In London they have almost given up completely with pirates cos its a losing battle x

If you listen carefully to the transmission it has breathy note to the female computer generated voice with great inflection on its last number to add a human touch to the sound ....and is almost like a steam fair calliope or calliopet machine speaking .....playing sweet music to the crowds ....and its the name of the greek goddess who did the also sing sweet music..... this coupled with folk songs 1st line of lyrics which states .."when I was bound a apprentice in famous Lincolnshire"...."full well i served my master for nigh on 7 years".....what better choice of song for a field agent when you think of the work of spying or intelligence gathering...often romanticised by Ian Fleming or John le carre ...but probably a tough assignment for an agent who had to endure years serving others under difficulty as the choice of song tune and lyrics clearly shows ......Great vid Lewis as always

I miss radioshack and its uk counterpart tandy I used love the catalogue or mail circular when it came through the door...I grew up learning all about radio from its kits eg the 150 in 1 project kit ....my mum said I've never seen a box of tricks be used to death so much every day ..it was the best present she got me as 13 year old ...I the progress to all the am radio kits fm ones and the vhf monitor kits...at 16 came the local bar...beer...ladies...and all other distractions eg cb ham and a pirate station along the way .....and later in life marriage and mortgage...now in my 50s and more time..I have in the last few years repurchased from ebay all those radio kits unbuilt and mint condition some even still have the radioshack battery from 1982 with them ....the wife growls at me when she opens the guest bedroom wardrobe and sees my radio museum of youth on the shelf but hey a man has have his memories ...and .....I love it .....thank you radio shack xxx

I don't think a week goes by without me reflecting on my 1st encounter with cb in 1979 from seeing a jaws mk 2 set with a firestik in a neighbours car ......then followed another neighbour bringing one back from the states and letting me have ago ....I was hooked ....but being illegal mum said I cannot have one ...but a cb reciever she did buy me and ive lost of the times I fell asleep under the cover with it left on...only to find the 9 volt battery exhausted ...I even tracked breakers down at 10 years of age in 1980 and simply knocked on there door and asked do you have cb ....and let me have a go....imagine that in 2022! ....I once blagged my way into a very pretty lady breakers flat and not only spent 3 hours on her midland 3001.. but also scoff most of her chocolate biscuits....my heart will always be with all things cb and 11meters even if 27/81uk legal cb was a little boring at times and i busted in 1987 for ssb tvi..... .but .....here in uk we now have since 2014 what all breakers wanted at the start the American block with all modes.... and despite having a full ham licence I get more joy operating a vintage 23 channel am set poted from the states..than a high end piece of ham kit... 10-4 good buddy's Lewis great movie big 10-4 rog

Always cool the crystal controlled scanner ...they always looked cool on those American T.V shows opening credits .. such as s.w.a.t...or in the final episode of the bionic woman ..or my all time favourite the realistic pro 48 installed in the bulkhead of ..the A team van ..and in the bedroom of Peter Parker in spiderman 2 ..... they grace any shack still today ....its intresting to note you can play scanner lottery when buying from the states on say ebay ...cos they often come pre loaded with crystals and it was amazing to hear things straight away when firing the the 2 imported pro 48s I purchased from the new york area ....one came full of crystals that allowed me to listen to the London transport bus service ....keep listening yall 73s de rob Great video lewis

In 1982 in south east essex u.k .....as a young breaker myself and a fellow cber eyeballed 2 lady breakers a little older than us ...we met up in the town and wandered around laughing joking then walked past a local kfc ... suddenly out of the restaurant came 3 older guys say 16/17 who were dining there and accused me and my friend of staring them out ...they came over and threatened us with a beating ....we just listened to them talk rubbish ....and the ringleaders last words after extolling how hard he was were ......."if you adress me as sir tonight and in the future if you ever see me in the street ... me and my 2 friends won't kick you your teeth now ... so to get rid of them we just obliged... one of the lady breakers unbeknown to us knew him as a wannabe bully boy from her part of town ....but he did not know her....next day we all met on channel 14 disciusing what happened.and before we knew it she put the word out ....and a little posse of breakers called at his home asking if "sir" would like to come and have fight either one on one or as a group of 3 ......all I can say is within minutes sir was crying and sir was apologising for what he had said........such was the power of the cb radio community in uk cb history in those early years x Ps handles and qth withheld xxx 73s

Hi Lewis great article as always....I've seen tropo with my own eyes and ears .... one evening I heard Eastern European pmr operators on my company's pmr kit swishing in and out and hey presto the weather conditions were perfect as you explained....ive also seen some years back essex police frequencies swamped inland by large dutch trawlers using uhf handhelds for intership ops at sea. 73s Rob

They hold so much fascination and such a history, and sometimes a sadness i used to love the swedish rhapsody thurs night usb mode schedule on 3.825 just outside 80m band it started with a beep 10mins before the hour and then into its broadcast i remember hearing its last transmission I've allways wanted to df a station to its source. Fab video Lewis.... from mid 80s to mid nineties and don't think a week went by where at least one night a week I never slept due to scanner listening....I eavesdropped on anything and everything and as I've said before ..things I wish I had not heard ... today when working in the office shack I leave close call on and hear that way ...sometimes I go scanning around.... another old trick was to open up various companies repeaters if you had a wide banded vhf and uhf set with ccts etc and wind up the users......me and a friend one night in 1988 in essex were out following police shouts ..I suggested we go through a bus lane as a short cut (no anpr back then)...anyway unknown the shout was over before we get there and we met the police in the bus lane head on ..he clocked the realistic pro 57 and asked hello hello whats that son told him what it was and said it picks up fire ambulance and taxi ...he said police also! I said no but do you know the frequency! Acting dumb....I had already reset the cpu with the point of a bic pen quickly as the police stopped us thus wiping out the memory banks....phew! Miss them days Ps my mate got fined for bus lane and no tax lol Pps I got burgled in 91 and my pro 2005 was lifted...I got an aor after that

Many a officer enjoyed cb I was told and it was often plod who couldn't see what all the fuss was about when asked to support the the gpo or dti on a confiscation or raid on pirate radio in fact the police have worked with London pirates in the past via an intermediary community spokesman or mp to call for community calm when tensions were rising at times

Love these small sites Lewis ...a soap dodging ham i knew lived nearby one in Wales in the early 80s and a simple 2 watt duel band handheld would wipe out the relayed analogue TV signal with ease that is until the village began to curse in Welsh to the local council suddenly gpo/dti/ iba got involved stopped scratchng there backsides when visiting to see the issue for themselves and began scratching there heads ......and........ installed better filtering and adjacent channel rejection kit ......good video m8 keep em coming

Clearly remember seeing these cheat devices in the glass cabinet at waters and stanton in essex 😮....this along with the aor scanner and reaction tune scout ....I borrowed my friends and the range was good but I plauged by hospital pagers..... great article Lewis and they were indeed great times the 90s for listening to drug deals, affairs, arguments, conspiracy to commit crime and baby monitors 😅

Great history Lewis from a famous corner of London....I used to see the v dipole on the way home from when I worked in Parliament Square at he guildhall crown court back then in 1995 iv thought it must be hf for the admiralty etc....none the less it still looks good up there as do the helix arrays....if only we could see what is at the other end ....maybe we will....one day.

  161. This is a raw nerve for us all Lewis in recent years choices of gas and electricity and broadband etc were hailed as wonderful but wide choice didn't promise a better service as we all know. Many us radio enthusiasts from all ends of the spectrum if you pardon the pun have our own favourites in broadcasting whatever they may be.....and myself personally have always felt we get a lot of choice from all bbc services........(I wont rant on about the world service I still miss on medium wave) ...but to start chipping away again at local radio is a clear attempt to lead us all to Less choice coupled with poor service ... It's not good let's hope the corporation can see its way past its own self destruction..... Ps the only man allowed to make local semi regional once a week was legendary presenter Keith skues with his Saturday night show covering beds Herts bucks essex Cambridgeshire Norfolk and Suffolk.

Cellular hand-off occurs quite rapidly in city areas ...so listening to a long intresting conversation was always a hit as you got learn a lot about people's lives....nothing was more upsetting than a juicy gossip being cut short as the cell user drove out of range and was handed over to another cell site.....drat!

My friend keyed over an outside broadcast link some years back was reporting to a famous fm station who had sent the dj to join the ⁰ march of an army unit given the freedom of our town after there tour of iraq...... the roving presenter knew within seconds something was wrong because he quickly said I can't hear my voice in my headphones over the loop back channel ....my friend done this with his modified ft857 around 442mhz with ease ..these systems of outside broadcast are poss more secure today ...Great vid Lewis always of intrest is a broadcast intrusion x

Great video Lewis so much of this went on in the late 70s and early 80s....peronal feelings were often a justification for revenge or prosecution take example gpo/ris/ofcom its investigation arm was and still is largely run by licenced amateurs...often backed by the toothless r.s.g.b ...so much injustice over the years has occurred over the years by this sort of behaviour.

Great video Lewis I used to hear a test transmitter in 1980 from North London on mw around 540khz firing up every 30 ins or so with a chime ident stating its range as Chesham in the west and Southend in the east...I would imagine in readiness for local and regional expansion.......Great flypast of the masts and insulators with the drone well done lewis

It was a nice piece of "light touch kit" Lewis..although not as good as the legendary motorola radius" my wife had to carry one as an emergency responder for sheltered accommodation......i used nick out of her hand bag and peruse the limited channels when it was the uncoded squelch model and ptt the repeater and wind to wind her colleagues up As Lewis will confirm I've never grown up.....

Great cd of number's history Lewis I arranged the first ever enigma magazine in meeting in 1998 at the Royal Hotel Purfleet essex just 6 attended with a small e3 flag on the table and Paul beamont now of enigma 2000 chaired the meeting....and yes a couple who looked out of place for a semi rough essex boozer were clearly listening to all that was discussed I believe they were from the intelligence services....my goodness where has 25 years gone x

We have similar private systems in use by our local council too monitor district heating systems its done to prevent abuse of heating... eg dear old lady goes of to visit her sister for the weekend but wants to dry her washing while away...so decides to leave her heating full to dry just a few clothing items... shes paying the same fixed fee as her neighbour whos sensible with her heating so thus a system of monitoring combined with heat meters and data usage sent back to the council and billed as "pay as you go" and not the old fixed fee ....stops the abuse ...especially they see the bill😮 it garners sensible use etc Saying that the bills are still very competitive as we buy our gas in bulk discounts and this is passed on to the tenants Well done again on the 100k+ subs lewis keep up good work mate

Absolutely..all number station operations have past and present used "opaque fillers" to fool and confuse the opposition and sometimes themselves.....I clearly remember s07c variant broadcast during the Moscow Whitehouse seige along with some very long Russian number broadcasts strong in the uk when there was a Russian state visit and and u.s visit just possibly to let uk or us intelligence agencies ...were still here guys pick the bones out of this......

My friend lived in wales next to a similar setup the qrp tv relay could be wiped out with ease with a 2 meter handheld all analogue kit back then of course .....the then dti later rca then ofcom visited to investigate this and were not impressed 😅....that was in 1982 ..looking at your resaearch lewis we can how easy it is to have pirate t.v .....great info lewis 😊 well done

Gpo/dti heavy handed tactics were often used against cb users to make an example of 1 person to frighten many others....how much has changed.in last 40 years.... because so often was the case...the gpo/dti were found to be diabolical liar's and often courts believed them because of there self imposed status.

We had similar in south east essex uk ...one quite night listening to the police ....the channel burst in to life.. a local bar that was under observation for drug dealing from a disused building opposite filmed a man run out of the target bar and throw a rock through the window they were observing and filming out of!....well the observation team shouted for back up for them to be extracted out of the rear entrance while police officers distracted the gathering crowd at the front Someone knew they were there Not much on the bands these days so sad

Another historical gem from across the pond and journey along the dial of radio .....its Intresting however though the information from the 4 minute part onwards is probably the same the world over and that is ...ham radio enthusiasts taking the law into there own hands .... Thinking that they have authority over others.... so many well documented cases can be found on lpws website of this.....from the volunteer radio group who walked over the Lockerbie crash site ....to personal visits and threats from deluded hams that had not seen the inside 4 sides of a shower cubicle for months ..some things never change almost 80 years on...

About 8 years ago ish the American block of 40 channels which we all call the mids or original cb band was made legal to use on ssb and am cos remember we were given our own unique set of fm 40 channels in 1981 on 27.601.25 to 27.991.25 fm which is ok but was not wanted at the time...then by late eighties we were given the American block as mentioned above but renamed called cept e.u here but fm only so now we had an 80 channel service....so back to 8 years ago then...ironically that year of legally granted am ssb use marked aprox 35 years after what all old illegal cbers in the uk using old am ssb imported sets fought tooth and nail for in the early eighties petitioning the government and marching on downing Street as some of my old good buddies did....is now legal...... but to use the the old legacy sets like the American 40 channel am ssb are ones is still deemed unlawful.... so you have to buy multimode and multi channel/standard type approved sets like the president mckinley etc ...but those who do often end up using it on ssb international out of band portion anyway 27.415 to 27.605....27.555 being calling channel ...however here in the UK there is thriving unique market for old cb sets of all modes and kinds... and including the use of ham gear on 11meters .... shacks ...radios.... channel choice ....and mode are now as unique and individual and as the people that choose to use them..... .....the last prosecution for illegal cb use was 2003 I believe.....but that's not to say ofcom will not be active in the future but the bands are lightly policed if at all....its more often over zealous old school soap dodging ham operator's who often try to police it with on air comments ...while sneakily having a sneaky cq themselves as I seen in the past when heard one operating on 11m illegally I called him by his first and he begged me never to do it again! cos his ham friends wouldn't for cast him out forever if they found out Big lols and 73s from london uk xxxx

Such was the determination of the ussr to block the usa inc its allie Britain and there broadcast information 😮😮😮......in fact the ussr and the usa are mentioned in bible prophecy in the book of Daniel as future world powers as the "king of the north" VS the "king of the south" that were and are today constantly pushing against each other militarily and politically but each one never prevailing....great information lewis

  275. Great video Lewis the building would make a great home .... I would imagine all the utility Co antennas and microwave equipment would be fir telemetry today as pmr is rarely used today as most companies opt for mobile comms.....

  277. Great history Lewis I wonder if someone knows where they were manufactured...STC UK had sites at new Southgate London...harlow New town and basildon new town ..thusm many people moving to these towns did so to get a job with a house in 1950s onwards
