Real democracy excluded foreigners, women and so on. All this eventually leads to betrayal of good people and the middle class. Even America is not a democracy as far as republican. Also, forcing so many opposing incompatible groups to live together only creates tensions and inconvenience to all sides, letting the ruling class strengthen its hold, again s screwing people at the bottom, where socialist regimes takes care of minimal standard and comfort of living for everyone or at least most.
