The earliest proto-forms of techno are found in the work of German bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Kraftwerk were using 4-to-the-floor beats exactly like found in techno tracks as early as 1973 and some of these tracks could actually be played in a modern set. Not the music, but the rave scene around it emerged in the US. Techno itself stems from electro, which started off in the German rock scene when synthesizers and drum machines took the place of guitars and drum kits. Then there's the melodic side of electronic music, e.g. trance, which is based on 1970s space rock bands like Space and of course the composer Jean-Michel Jarre. The US was the birthplace of house though, which emerged when producers started sampling funk and disco records over a drum machine beat, making both house as a genre as well as its precursors native to the US.

Lol, what? Metal is a part of pop music and it achieved broad mainstream success in the late '70s and early '80s when bands like Van Halen and Whitesnake became absolute superstars. It again achieved broad mainstream success with bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit 20 years later.

What kind of nonsense is that? The heyday of electronic music was when it was mainstream, the late 1990s and early 2000s. Events like Trance Energy, Creamfields, Dance Valley, the Zürich Street Parade, arena raves with artists like Paul Oakenfold and Mauro Picotto playing in front of massive crowds, and tracks like Mario Piu - The Vision, Cosmic Gate - The Drums, or Mauro Picotto - Proximus being played on music video channels all over Europe. Mainstream influences are fine - they should just not be excessive.

In other words, it's a faux religion. One which offers only escapism and ultimately, nothing of real value to wider society. At least churches do a lot of charity work, run hospitals and schools, and promote family values. I spent years going to raves and even producing and releasing dozens and dozens of tracks, many of which are still sold on Beatport, and while I genuinely liked the music (trance in my case, not techno - but the exact same thing applies to any form of electronic music, be it techno, trance, house, hardstyle etc.) I grew to absolutely loathe the culture of hedonistic degeneracy and refusal to grow out of a sort of artificially prolongued adolescence which surrounds it. People in their mid to late 20s and early 30s should be getting married and starting families, not being off their tits on MDMA and listening to repetitive music.
