Left-leaning people tend to be more highly sensitive to negative emotion than right-leaning people and centrists, and as a result, higher in harm avoidance. But when the most radical voices among them determine the agenda, the people who play along, who for the most part are way more moderate, will see these parts of their personality traits being reinforced, ending up being whipped up into a state of fear they would have never gotten into on their own devices... and the more the goal posts (and social pressure) shift, the more centrists will be drawn into this as well, as after all, human behaviour to a significant degree is driven by social pressures to conform.
