@RealConstructor Classic cars can also have modern licence plates, even with very recent number and letter combinations, if they are recent imports. Also, certain import cars, mainly from the US, will have yellow and black licence plates that are narrower and don't have the EU sticker.

People here have to meet higher standards in order to qualify for a licence than in the US and most other non-EU countries. I've repeatedly encountered foreigners already with a (foreign - only valid for a couple of months of residency here) driver's licence and years of experience behind the wheel taking lessons with my driving instructor. Americans, Ukrainians, Turks. They on average require 20 hours of lessons before they're ready to take the exam. Says something about how we value safe and pro-active traffic participation but also demand that drivers are not hesitant or overly cautious. You'll fail your driving test if you are too hesitant even without breaking the traffic code. Driving on the right lane of a motorway with 80km/h at a safe distance behind a lorry and not overtaking, is perfectly legal, as is allowing another driver to go first if you actually have the right-of-way (assuming you're not holding up other traffic behind you), but you'll 100% fail your driving exam if doing these things and they're just some simple examples.
