  3. Depression and anxiety aren't diseases. They're symptoms caused by various underlying factors, which themselves might or might not fit the definition of an illness. Depression as a result of traumatic loss of a loved one can occur in perfectly healthy individuals. Anxiety as a result of chronic and unnatural stress, entirely due to external factors: same thing. Both can also be caused by nutrient deficiencies which can be caused by an unhealthy diet, but also by problems with the gut biome - which, despite our gut being inside of us, actually is considered 'external' in biological terms. We live in a society that is sick, and living in it creates an evolutionary mismatch between human nature and the world around us. We evolved to live surrounded by extended family, being self-sufficient, and dealing with acute stress. We did not evolve to deal with the crap that we have to deal with on a daily basis due to the way our society bombards us with unhealthy stimuli all the time, and because we have been taught to eat crap, make psychologically unhealthy lifestyle choices like remaining unmarried and childless, etc. We should all be living like Mormons. Embrace family values. Refuse to take stimulants. Eat wholesome food. Engage in communal prayer (which is just a collective form of meditation and has beneficial effects on the serotonergic system). Get married at a hyoung age and regard the nuptial vows as a sacred oath rather than a civil contract. Share the effort of raising children between family members instead of dumping them in some daycare centre, etc.
