  1. We have lost our moral compass but that's an issue completely separate from this. This is a problem of people making suboptimal career choices and having been tricked into following their dreams rather than living in reality. This man could have been living in a nice appartment or house had he not decided to be stubborn and pursue a career that isn't really a career but just a bunch of people refusing to grow up larping as creative entrepreneurs - the typical artist in a nutshell for ya. Also, his quality of life would have been a lot higher with his income level outside of the big city. This man chooses to live in a dystopian shithole like London out of his own volition, and he also chooses to pursue a career that doesn't get him income stability or an opportunity to make a living somewhere affordable. People who choose to get the shaft only have themselves to blame for it. In his situation I'd have made completely different choices: become a tradesman rather than artist. In London this means you have a golden opportunity for raking in serious cash because of the amount of redevelopment work going on and the terrible shortage of skilled tradesmen while you can commute from Essex or Kent and not be shafted on the housing market. Also given the fact that he worked abroad, he seems pretty mobile so why not get a job in the offshore industry? Oil platform workers make a shitload of money and also have little time to spend it on stupid shit. People should stop chasing their dreams and instead look for a more practical approach to living their life, let your dreams be your hobby and maximise income opportunity with the skill set you posess. An artist will likely find satisfaction in working as an electrician, plasterer or carpenter as well, because these jobs also require creative thinking and working with your hands but they also pay well and also offer independence as soon as you can buy a van and a complete set of tools. Independent contractors in the trades can make more money than a sollicitor easily. And then something else: Why does anyone in their right mind want to live in a city like London? It's overcrowded, dirty, and except for the gentrified parts it's one massive fucking cesspool of urban decay and I actually know several people who own homes there and who are looking to flee to Reading or whatever more provincial city still in the wide region of London.
