I think it's a measurement of character. The movie tells us that Stanley is a goodish guy, yes, his immediate inner desires are petty and self serving, but that's pretty much true for everyone, as it is human nature. But otherwise he would do good. (Which is supported by the fact that noone is killed or even hurt, really)

@tonymata8070 Well the Mask is something that bring foward the repressed personality of the wielder? So if someone who is more like a good person wears it they might become a loveable jerk, but nothing too serious while if someone who is really damaged or not too good (maybe not evil either, so neutral), wears it they can become that violent.
