  1. I had the idea the other day: Piercings, tattoos, brightly coloured hair, the works could be a symptom of identity crisis/problems. You could have any of the above as a stylistic or meaningful choice too of course. But for these people I believe, it's a huge part of their identity. But that can only be true if A - they assign too great a meaning to otherwise arbitrary features or B - They otherwise lack any personality.
