I think there are two ways to do quick-time events right. First one is the "Critical event" . These should happen when a battle/fight/anything gets to some critical and supposedly very awesome part. IN this case the quick-time event should be hard and challenging, since the reward for completing the event is high. Sadly I don't really know any examples to this. But let's say, Skyrim could have benefitted from these, so instead of having that dragon one-shot you, give you the chance to fight back and get free from it's clutches. The second type is the "Reward event" these events are supposed to reward a previous accomplishment with some awesome and glorious button-smashing. Perfect example is the last fight against Zeus in God of War 3, when all you do is just smashing that thunder-strucker"s face until your screen is all red. A good idea would be to present a "Critical event" then present a "Reward event" in case of succesfull execution. Sadly many developers use reward events as critical events which makes 0 sense, but they are way too lazy to create a critical event. Too bad.
