Personal example: Back when I first played Dragon Age Origins I pirated it. Played it through the end and liked it so much that I purchased the full version with all DLC and whatnot. It was objectively worse with crappy DLC that wouldn't even start because the program used to check authorization for it wouldn't start on it's own and had to manually change settings for it. The publisher was punishing paying customers for purchasing their title legitimately.
