The colonial border lines are a very recent thing, and before that there were still natural borders established by those tribes. The concept and structure of borders have existed for thousands of years before the rush to Africa. The idea that borders are entirely arbitrary (when allowed to form naturally) is what's ACTUALLY naive and bullshit. Humans generally like living with other people who are of the same culture/religion/beliefs etc. That's why Africa and the Middle East got so fucked up was because a bunch of ARBITRARY border lines were drawn, forcing groups who had previously been separated and disliked one another to be squashed together in the same area. Natural borders established over time by indigenous peoples are good, arbitrary borders created by foreign powers who care nothing for the local relation of cultural groups is bad. You can't refer to just one period (the colonial period) to act like borders serving as a way to divide populations that believe differently has not been true on the whole for the majority of human history. You're anecdotally bullshitting, mate.

And that still led to natural ethnic divisions due to landmarks (as in, borders not being arbitrary, they naturally came to be for the reasons you mentioned), rather than forcibly shoving people together like with how the French and British divided up the middle east after World War 1, or how colonial powers divided up Africa. They ignored those naturally formed boundaries that borders naturally come from.
