  3. It's actually quite likely that the combined pressure of the nukes, Russia's declaration of war, and an imminent invasion combined is what finally pushed the peace process to its conclusion. If you look up how bad the fire bombings were, the nukes don't look nearly as bad and in reality the generals didn't care much about using it on Japan. It's more that a single bomb was able to do the same amount of damage as a multi-month firebombing campaign.
