He was 2nd generation Nikita Khrushchev and instrumental to put a stop to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster along with president Ronald Reagan. That was a very frightening time. Got along though. He became an ambassador tor the fresh water of the world and spent a good deal of his time toward that office. I do not think he actually left office.
