Apologize for slavery? Britain put itself in debt for nearly a century to purchase the freedom of every slave in the empire, and then it spent the better part of the 19th century and most of the might of the Royal Navy stamping out the Atlantic Slave Trade. And during the American Civil War, ordinary (poor working class) workers in the cotton mills in Northern England refused to work with cotton from Confederate states. in 1862, Lancashire mill workers, at great personal sacrifice, took a principled stand by refusing to touch raw cotton picked by US slaves. In 1863, US President Lincoln wrote to the 'working men of Manchester' thanking them for their anti-slavery stance ..
