  1. God isn’t magical. The pope is “preaching” as he suffers. Suffering is intrinsic to human life. The real message is how we deal with suffering, not how we sidestep it.

  3. Pope Francis is preaching through and by means of his suffering. He will not be praying for a miracle, and neither will most Catholics. God is not a purveyor of cheap tricks. Suffering is part of our human experience. The real issue is how do we become more human, build more community in our fragility and weakness.
