Here's what i don't understand: About 40% of EU gas consumption is used for domestic heating, 25% for industry and 35% for power generation. Russia supplies 40% of EU gas. So stop using gas for power generation, and the problem is pretty much solved. Many countries in EU, including Germany, have enough coal powerplants to replace gas. The German government have already decided to reactivate some of those powerplants. Germany and Poland still have pretty decent coal reserves. The gas turbines can also run on other fuels, such as oil or biogas. There is also a new pipeline from Norway coming online later this year, Romania's new offshore gas production, the new LNG deals etc. And Russia is still delivering some gas. So why is this still a crisis? Sounds like a very fixable problem to me?
