it seems very unlikely to me that the US would stop supporting Ukraine. It would ruin the US' credibility as a reliable ally, and probably cause a lot of countries to shift towards the east instead. That is a high price to pay, considering how cheap this war has been for the US compared to other conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

as another European, i disagree completely. I haven't met anyone in Denmark, Sweden or Germany that doesn't understand it is in Europe's best interest to stand up to russian aggression.

i saw a comment from a guy who claimed to be a former US artillery man. He said the main purpose of dpicm was counter battery fire, and that makes a lot of sense to me. I can see how they could be useful against russian artillery positions.
5
Nothing has really changed recently. Both sides have made some minor gains in different areas, but that's about it.
4
it's not that surprising that the russians are not breaking yet. Judging by previous wars i know about, it should take at least 3-4 years until the population really has had enough. But putin is doing a lot to soften the impact, so it could take longer this time.
4
@Davitofrito i am sure a lot of Americans would end support for Israel and close the military bases in Germany if asked. But those things are probably not gonna happen either, because the "professionals" in the US government know the value of US influence around the world. And i am sure the same people can see how bad it would be for the US if countries in Asia and Europe start to look towards China instead.

but how much would a NATO security guarantee actually be worth? If we were not willing to support Ukraine until the end now, why would that change in the future?
3
@dogzdigital It doesn't really matter what the poor people in remote villages think, they will not be the ones protesting on the red square. The most likely people to get fed up and start an uprising are students in Moscow or st petersburg.
3
@nkosipwl yeah. that's why i assume russia is going to break first. Ukraine is fighting to defend themselves, while the russians are fighting to annex some more territory...
3
i agree, russia should surrender.
3
@CALIMA2000 that is the problem with your suggestion. The US has already given Ukraine security guarantees, when Ukraine gave up their nukes in 1994. So if the US is not willing to at least supply some weapons until the end, then what are US security guarantees worth in the future?
2
The EU has already locked in multi year support for Ukraine. And the EU has also overtaken the US as the largest sponsor of aid to Ukraine.
2
Russia is going back behind the iron curtain where they belong.
2
@limedickandrew6016 yes i am sure Ukraine can last 4 years. The argument about Ukraine running out of manpower is just as stupid as the talk about russia running out of missiles. But it is possible that Ukraine will break first. Time will tell.
2
it must be difficult for you to walk with those massive balls. Respect 👍
2
go Sweden 👍
2
@HanSolo__ Go Poland 👍
2
me too, he is the most entertaining clown in the entire russian clown show...
2
i agree 👍
2
that is exactly what the russian trolls are trying to achieve. To sow confusion and make us lose interest. I like to take every new piece of information with a grain of salt, and wait a week or 2 for confirmation...
2
you have to define what "winning" the war means first. As i see it, russia will be worse of no matter how the war ends...
2
let me guess, that article was written by a pro-russian guy? Nothing but wishful thinking....
2
total aid to Ukraine: US 69.5 billion euro, EU: 131,9 billion euro. Source: Kiel Institute.
2
yeah both countries will be worse off, no matter how the war ends.
1
France is fine, it's just the French being French. They love to protest and riot.
1
the war is just getting started. It will go on for at least 2 more years.
1
@timmerk7363 this war gets a lot more attention. Many people in the west have probably never heard of the Kurds, but they know about the American support for Ukraine.
1
@emildavidsen1404 yeah, but the public opinion is not usually enough to change long term foreign policy. I don't think most Americans really want to have military bases in Germany or give money to Israel, but it still happens.
1
@baneofbanes sure, but the media has also talked about the conflict in Yemen. And yet i found myself at a dinner table with a group of well educated people not long ago, and at one point I realized that half of these people didn't know there was a war in Yemen. Most western people don't pay much attention to another conflict in the middle east...
1
@ronhmclaughlin yeah i could imagine that the shells would be great against columns of armored vehicles, like we see in Ukraine.
1
russia will lose no matter how the war ends. Let's say that russia manages to capture and hold on to the Donbass, then what? Russia expands their territory and population by 1-2%, but how will that benefit the average russian? And russia will still be permanently sanctioned, which means less foreign investment and less trade with their European neighbors. So russia's best educated will most likely continue to leave russia in search of better opportunities abroad. And russia is also getting more NATO on their borders, as previously neutral Sweden and Finland are now openly against russia. The point is, russia will be worse off even if they actually win the fight.
1
really? I haven't met any of them...
1
multi-polar is just a return to the cold war era. Less global trade, and more proxy wars...
1
don't worry, they are not sending the money to russia.
