it seems very unlikely to me that the US would stop supporting Ukraine. It would ruin the US' credibility as a reliable ally, and probably cause a lot of countries to shift towards the east instead. That is a high price to pay, considering how cheap this war has been for the US compared to other conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

@Davitofrito i am sure a lot of Americans would end support for Israel and close the military bases in Germany if asked. But those things are probably not gonna happen either, because the "professionals" in the US government know the value of US influence around the world. And i am sure the same people can see how bad it would be for the US if countries in Asia and Europe start to look towards China instead.

but how much would a NATO security guarantee actually be worth? If we were not willing to support Ukraine until the end now, why would that change in the future?

@CALIMA2000 that is the problem with your suggestion. The US has already given Ukraine security guarantees, when Ukraine gave up their nukes in 1994. So if the US is not willing to at least supply some weapons until the end, then what are US security guarantees worth in the future?

The EU has already locked in multi year support for Ukraine. And the EU has also overtaken the US as the largest sponsor of aid to Ukraine.

@timmerk7363 this war gets a lot more attention. Many people in the west have probably never heard of the Kurds, but they know about the American support for Ukraine.

@emildavidsen1404 yeah, but the public opinion is not usually enough to change long term foreign policy. I don't think most Americans really want to have military bases in Germany or give money to Israel, but it still happens.

@baneofbanes sure, but the media has also talked about the conflict in Yemen. And yet i found myself at a dinner table with a group of well educated people not long ago, and at one point I realized that half of these people didn't know there was a war in Yemen. Most western people don't pay much attention to another conflict in the middle east...
