  2. russia will lose no matter how the war ends. Let's say that russia manages to capture and hold on to the Donbass, then what? Russia expands their territory and population by 1-2%, but how will that benefit the average russian? And russia will still be permanently sanctioned, which means less foreign investment and less trade with their European neighbors. So russia's best educated will most likely continue to leave russia in search of better opportunities abroad. And russia is also getting more NATO on their borders, as previously neutral Sweden and Finland are now openly against russia. The point is, russia will be worse off even if they actually win the fight.
