it's all about energy storage. There may be less sun hours in the winter, but there is a lot during the summer. There are many ways to store energy, such as pumped hydro, grid scale batteries or you could use the excess electricity to produce hydrogen or methane (same as natural gas).

@patnelson2091 we don't have enough gas and oil in Europe, so we would have to keep importing. That is not really a solution, it just gives other countries leverage they can use against us.

@XxLIVRAxX sodium-ion batteries are the best option in my opinion. Sodium is one the worlds most abundant elements.

@araara4746 of course you can. Most industries can be electrified. And if you absolutely need methane in your production, then you can produce it through electrolysis or as biogas.

@araara4746 that is what the batteries are for. It's not exactly new technology, you can order a solar panel with battery storage on Amazon if you want. But the excess electricity can also be used to produce hydrogen or methane (natural gas) through electrolysis. This is also tech that exists already, we have several small scale commercial facilities in Denmark who do exactly that. The first large-scale facility is now under construction.

@araara4746 there are always uv rays during the day, solar panels will still charge on a cloudy day. And days without any wind at all is pretty rare, at least where i live. But a nice storage of hydrogen or methane can help fill the gap when needed, just like our natural gas storage does today.

@flubadubdubthegreat1272 any long term solution for Germany will cost hundreds of billions and take years to build. But it could also be a boost if Germany can produce their own sodium-ion batteries, solar panels, windturbines, and hydrogen facilities. Wind and solar is the cheapest source of energy by far, so once built it could actually make Germany more competitive than before.

@maryzmijski6087 nuclear would benefit from energy storage as well. Nuclear plants has to run 24/7, so a lot of energy is wasted during the night.
