prepare to be disappointed. It is going to be like "the toiletpaper crisis" back in 2020. A lot of panic and inflated prices, and then nothing really happens. Russia supplied 155bcm, or 38% of EU's gas consumption in 2021. Imports from other countries have increased by 50bcm in 2022, and russia has delivered at least 40bcm so far. So the actual gas shortage is around 65bcm, or roughly 15% compared to 2021. Natural gas accounted for 32% of EU's primary energy consumption in 2021. That means the energy used for heating, electricity and industry. So the actual energy shortage is 4.8% compared to 2021.

@stephenwhite345 no we can not afford it. And that is why we use less. In my country, demand for gas has dropped 30% compared to the same time last year. And electricity is down 10%. But what do you think will happen to the prices later this year, when supply has dropped 4.8% but demand has dropped by at least 10%?

horrible journalism here. The pipelines were already closed, so it doesn't really change the situation in Europe. The only change is that lifting the sanctions on russia in return for gas is no longer an option for Germany

@stephenwhite345 40% of the gas is used for heating, the rest is used for power generation and industry. But i feel pretty confident that very few people will turn the thermostat up to 22 degrees this winter. We can't have prices that few can afford, and still have the same demand. And as you mentioned, a lot of companies have reduced production or shut down completely. Which means less demand for energy.

@stephenwhite345 a heatwave means more aircondition. And don't forget that France had problems with their nuclear plants due to the drought. Not to mention all the hydroelectric plants. And yet we still used less gas for power generation...

i think this is great news, there is no turning back now. I don't think the russians did it though, putin can't pressure the Germans to lift the sanctions in return for gas if he can't deliver the gas anyway.
