this will probably hurt both sides, but it has to happen. The EU cannot afford to become even more dependent on a country that has an "unlimited partnership" with russia. The next decades will be full of troubles, so the EU needs to be as self-sufficient as possible.

German car makers have moved a lot of their production to China, exporting cars back to Europe. So these tariffs will hurt them as well. These large corporations don't care that Europe is losing 1000s of jobs, as long as they can make short term profit. Unfortunately, these corporations have a lot of influence in the German government, even if their actions are hurting Germany in the long run...

@MrMakabar no Germany is not a net exporter to China. Germany's trade deficit with China in 2023 was around 58 billion euro.

@MrMakabar no worries 👍

in reality, it's all about national security. Europe allowed itself to become dependent on the US for security, dependent on russia for energy, and dependent on China for almost everything else. Trump tried to use security dependence against us when he was president, and will likely do so again if elected. Putin tried to use energy against us, and caused an energy crisis. And now China is trying to destroy the last industries in Europe, and make us even more dependent. So now Europe is finally waking up to the fact that all 3 dependencies have to end. Europe has to become self-sufficient again.

and how will we afford those chinese products when all the jobs are gone?

the EU needs to protect itself from both China and the US. Both would like to plunder Europe if we let them. But China is clearly the larger threat to EU's economy right now.

@Rainy-daze473 i got no problems with those kind of goods from China. If China decides to ban exports of mugs to Europe to punish us for supporting Taiwan, it's not gonna do much. But if China bans exports of something like anti-biotics, then we are in trouble.

China is just the next in line to underestimate the EU, thinking they have the upper hand. Didn't work out for Trump, the Brits or putin, and China will end up with the short end of the stick as well...

as a European, i would say that the US is just as bad as China now. I would prefer if the EU doesn't pick a side, and tries to maintain good relations with both countries.

@lancasterpenn how does the EU benefit from siding with the US against China? Please explain, because i don't see it. Both countries suck, there is no reason to pick a side in that conflict.
1
@lancasterpenn do you really think the relationship between the US and EU is going to survive another 3 years and 10 months of this nonsense? Because i seriously doubt it.
